Kantha sari bedspread No.11, Faded Pastels, hand-embroidered recycled cotton
Product: Vintage kantha bedspread. Size 220 x 140 cm. Handmade in West Bengal, India
Age-old craft of reclaiming worn textiles
The word Kantha comes from the Sanskrit "Kontha", meaning "rags". It is an ancient art listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The peasant women of West Bengal stack several layers of worn clothing, most often saris, and stitch them together to make blankets or bedspreads. In the villages, after the work in the fields and at home, the women gather, regardless of caste or religion, to paint with a needle and make the colors vibrate. The embroidery becomes a real social bond for these women, whose living conditions are precarious. This exceptional work gives them financial independence and a better standing in their community.
Details: recycled cotton. Front, floral pattern on a pink background. Back, purple background with earth-colored flowers.
