Yellow Hibiscus Flamingo, embroidered cushion

Product : A unique collage of flamingos and yellow hibiscus flowers, in appliqué and embroidery on a hand loomed cotton cushion.

The cloth is called a "Faso Dan Fani", it is hand woven cotton in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso and embroidered by a organisation of women artisans working for a social enterprise in Cape Town.

An edition of 3 cushions, each piece is one of a kind, embroidered with different flowers and flamingos.

Craft: This fabric is known as Faso Dan Fani, and each design is a woven story, full of symbols. It is made using a generations-old method of hand-weaving practised in West Africa. Faso Dan Fani literally means "woven loincloth of the homeland". The production of this fabric is of both economic and cultural importance in Burkina Faso, and it's continued production is a mater of national pride.

Storie makes these cushions, and works with these creators in order to transmit the knowledge of these traditional crafts, to promote this intangible cultural heritage, as well as economic autonomy of these craftspeople.

Embroidery: Heartworks was founded in Cape Town in 2005 as a springboard for a group of marginalised women (many of whom have HIV). The organisation helps train the women in fine embroidery. United by their talent, these women, from South Africa, Congo and Zambia, are artists. Each of their works is unique, and the women refer to their work as "haute couture" creations, and they are pieces for a colleciton. The group now involves more than 30 women, enabling them to generate a decent income and acquire the confidence to move forward in their lives
