Kantha, whose name comes from the Sanskrit "Kontha" meaning rags, is a traditional embroidery technique going back several centuries. The women of Bengal gather and hand-embroider several layers of recycled saris to give them new life as bedspreads. Beyond its textile function, this practice is a true social bond and a means of emancipation for these women artisans.
