The kantha, whose name comes from the Sanskrit "Kontha" meaning rags, is a traditional embroidery technique dating back several centuries. Women in Bengal gather and hand-embroider several layers of recycled saris to give them new life as bedspreads. Beyond its textile function, this practice is a true social bond and a means of empowerment for these women artisans.
Made from old textiles, each kantha carries the marks of time and the imprint of its history. Slight irregularities in the embroidery show its authentic, handcrafted character and make each piece truly one of a kind.
