Age-old craft of reclaiming worn textiles.
The word Kantha comes from the Sanskrit "Kontha", meaning "rags". It is an age-old art inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. Peasant women in West Bengal stack several layers of worn clothing, most often saris, and stitch them together into blankets or bedspreads. In the villages, after the work in the fields and at home, the women gather, regardless of caste or religion, to paint with a needle and bring the colors to life. The embroidery becomes a real social bond for these women, whose living conditions are precarious. This exceptional work gives them financial independence and improves their standing in the community.
