Green Buriti Flower Bag, Handwoven Macramé, Brazil
Product: Brazilian bags in palm straw, mesh and macramé, handmade by a community of women in the far north of Brazil. Each piece is unique.
Buriti bag. Origin: state of Maranhao, Brazil.
Buriti fiber comes from a palm, one of the largest in Brazil, Mauritia flexuosa, which grows wild in the north of the country. Originally, Indigenous communities prized it for its wood, straw and fruit.
The finest fiber is taken from the terminal bud at the crown of the plant's leaves. Boiled, dyed with various barks and dried, the fiber is split into thin strips and can then be worked.
This craft provides a source of income mainly for fishermen's wives.
