Product: Light woven tote bags, made of palm straw, mesh and macramé, handmade by a community of women in the far north of Brazil. Each piece is unique.
Origin: state of Maranhao, Brazil.
Buriti fibre comes from a palm tree, one of the largest in Brazil, Mauritia flexuosa, which grows spontaneously in the north of the country. Originally, Indian communities valued it for its wood, straw and fruit.
The finest fibre is extracted from the terminal bud of the leaf crown at the head of the plant. Boiled and dyed with different barks, dried, the fibre is separated into thin strips and can be worked.
This craft generates a source of income mainly for families of fishermen's in this rural region.
