Hand loomed towel: "Ochre & Orange"

Product : Handwoven towel, coloured using a space dye technique. A pure traditional Indian craft using hand spun Khadi cotton, finished with small twisted fringes.

Our towels are both light and very absorbent, they are both beautiful and practical in any bathroom. A detail of every day luxury.

They are also ideal for the beach, pool, sports, as a sarong, tablecloth or blanket.

Craft : Khadi cotton is both hand-spun and hand-woven, resulting in a softer and finer fabric. It is made in Indian homes from cotton, silk or wool yarn spun on a wheel, or "charkha". It is also sustainabme, few resources such as water or electricity are used to produce it, and the cloth is strong and durable, it's not a material you will use and wash and that will quickly deteriorate.

Khadi is a unique Indian fabric, valued because it is entirely handmade, but also for its cultural significance.

This textile tradition was revived by Mahatma Gandhi, who saw the fabric as a tool to bring financial independence to Indians across the country who would practice this craft at home. In his own words:

"The spinning-wheel represents to me the hope of the masses. The masses lost their freedom, such as it was, with the loss of the Charkha. The Charkha supplemented the agriculture of the villagers and gave it dignity. It was the friend and solace of the widow. It kept the villagers from idleness. For the Charkha included all the anterior and posterior industries-ginning, carding, warping, sizing, dyeing and waving. These in their turn kept the village carpenter and the blacksmith busy.The Charkha enabled the seven hundred thousand villages to become self-contained.…. Hence, if the villages are to come into their own, the most natural thing that suggests itself is the revival of the Charkha and all it means. "
