Product : natural indigo dyed shawl, covered in fine Nakshi Kantha embroidery, with the repeating motif of a pink lotus. One of a kind piece, and an exceptional example of this most beautiful textile tradition. Hand stitched by a cooperative of master craftswomen in India.

Craft: The word Kantha comes from the Sanskrit "Kontha" which means "rags". It is a thousand-year-old art that has been inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Heritage of Humanity list. The women farmers of Bengal assemble several layers of used clothes, most often Saris, which they embroider to make blankets or bedspreads. In the villages, after their other work is finished, women gather to decorate textiles with this age old embroidery. The craft is a real social bond for these women whose living conditions are precarious. This exceptional work gives them financial autonomy and improves their status within the community.

Creator: Storie works with an NGO in Kolkata that has been supporting and employing over a thousand women embroiderers since the 1970s.

This group supports its artisans, offering them both education and healthcare in addition to the income they earn from their work. This support includes training, scholarships, school and health facilities, and any other form of assistance necessary to improve the living conditions for the women and their families.

Fabric: 100% cotton dyed in natural indigo, with cotton embroidery.

Feel: Light and crisp, the more you wear it, the softer it becomes.

Care: Wash gently by hand in cold water. Do not soak. Dry in the shade.
