Green striped handwoven cotton throw blanket, No.4
Product: Elegant, very soft throw, handwoven in Khadi cotton, with small fringes.
Khadi cotton is both hand-spun and handwoven, which gives a softer, finer fabric. Our throws are very soft and heavy, woven by a community of women in northern India. Perfect for decoration, on a bed or sofa, or even as a shawl.
Craft: Khadi is handmade in Indian homes, from cotton, silk or wool thread spun on a wheel, or "charkha". It is woven with great respect for the environment, using few resources such as water or electricity, and it is strong and durable. Khadi is a unique Indian fabric, valued not only because it is entirely handmade, but also for its cultural meaning.
This textile tradition was revived by Mahatma Gandhi, who saw in this cloth a tool to bring financial independence to Indians across the country who would practice this craft at home. In his own words:
"The spinning wheel represents to me the hope of the masses. The masses lost their freedom, such as it was, with the disappearance of the Charkha. The Charkha supplemented the agriculture of the villagers and gave it dignity."
