Product: 100% cotton cushion cover. Dyed by hand using natural vegetable colours. 40cm X 40cm. Envelope style closing. Deep natural indigo blue and madder red.
Craft: these cushions have been made by a group of designers and artisans dedicated to reviving ancestral techniques of natural dying in Bangladesh. A social project concerned with craft heritage but also artisan welfare and the promotion of sustainable, ecological practices in the textile industry. All dyes are sourced locally and where possible use waste products (such as fruit peels and tree bark) or by products to create the colour.
Colour:
Indigo (Indigofera Tinctoria)
One of the most sought after and recognisable colours on the planet. The Indigofera Tinctoria plant is native to Bengal, grown commonly to improve the soil composition in between harvests. The leaves of the shrub are soaked and fermented to produce a wide spectrum of shades, from deep green to the prized radiant indigo blue. Known as Neel in the sub-continent, historically the pigment was used in painting and as a fabric dye for the garb of armed forces and important personalities. We use different recipes to create many different shades of blue.
Madder (Rubia cordifolia) widely known in Bangladesh as Manjit, has been used as a dye since antiquity. The stems of the plant produce a rich variety of reds, traces of which are found in the relics of King Tutankhamun’s tomb. In addition to the value of its colour, the Madder plant has medicinal benefits for the skin and can be found in many herbal apothecaries.
