Peasant women of West Bengal layer several worn garments, most often saris, and stitch them together to make blankets or bedspreads. In the villages, after the work in the fields and at home, the women gather, regardless of caste or religion, to paint with a needle and make the colors sing. Embroidery becomes a true social bond for these women, whose living conditions are precarious.
